A Weird Drink That You Won't Be Able To Get Enough Of

This drink confuses people and might gross them out, but once they try it they can never go back. I am talking about the Colombian tradition of serving hot chocolate with cheese (yes cheese) inside the drink.

Chocolate con queso is a Colombian delicacy usually served for breakfast but that can be enjoyed any time of day. It’s sold on the streets on your way to work or served at your abuela's house while you do your homework. It brings a sense of familiarity, warmth and a little (expected) surprise when you reach the bottom. The salty gooeyness of the cheese combines perfectly with the slightly bitter chocolate.

I'm not sure if this delicious drink came to be because someone accidentally dropped their queso in their chocolate but it is a must-have. For those of you who still might be grossed out two things I tell my friends are 1. this is not prepackaged hot chocolate served with cheddar cheese (because that sounds unpleasant) and 2. your cheese tastes like hot chocolate but your hot chocolate does not taste like cheese.

If you want to try out this drink, all you need is good quality chocolate, milk, and the cheese of your choice. You make this simple drink over the stove, letting the milk simmer and then adding chocolate. We like to use the brand Sol found at your local Compare Foods or in the international section of the supermarket. You mix until the chocolate is completely melted, then add cinnamon to your taste. When it’s ready you cut up small pieces of cheese such as mozzarella or queso panela. My favorite to use is the Polly-O Mozzarella because it's accessible at any grocery store and it melts very nicely. Add the cheese to the cup, pour the hot chocolate over it and serve with a spoon. As my family is from Bogotá, the (bread) capital of Colombia, this dish is not complete without french bread, croissant, rolls, etc. And that's it! A very easy yet delicious drink you can make from home. For the complete recipe click here.

If you're still not convinced, I leave you with a Buzzfeed video of people trying chocolate con queso for the first time.
